When you think of a Thanksgiving Pie you probably think of pumpkin, apple, or even pecan pies. But here is a great idea that will be a hit with all chocolate lovers (including the kids who might not be thrilled with all the fruity pie choices)!

This Chocolate Cream Pie is full of flavor, doesn't require that many ingredients, and only will take a few steps to complete! This recipe was originally made with a regular (white) pie crust but I decided to upgrade it a bit and made it even more chocolaty with a chocolate crust! But the choice is yours, whatever is your preference the result will be simply delicious!

Ingredients:

  • One 9-inch pie crust (baked, I used chocolate)
  • 3 egg yolks, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups of white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder or 1 ounce of chocolate
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 cups of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of frozen whipped topping (thawed) or just a whipped cream

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, cream together the egg yolks and sugar.
  2. Next mix in the cornstarch, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Stir the milk into the mixture gently.
  4. Cook mixture in a pot over medium heat until it is boiling. Be sure to stir constantly.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
  6. After slightly cooled, pour into the pie crust. Chill before serving to set the chocolate. Be sure to use the whipped topping to garnish the pie.

Tips:

  • If your pie refuses to set, the next time slightly increase the amount of cornstarch to make a firmer filling.
  • Another option is to lessen the amount of milk being used.
  • The type of cocoa being used can impact the sweetness of the pie. Don't be afraid to add some sugar or adjust to your taste preferences.
  • Consider trying a graham cracker crust.
  • Plan accordingly, it may take longer than you expect for the filling to come to a boil.

This pie is sure to please many guests. Some people choose to use skim milk or cream instead of the milk listed by the recipe. A lot of times some experimentation in the kitchen can give you a delicious desert tailored to your family's preferences! Don't be afraid to experiment.
